How JSTE works
Two layers. One talent journey.
Every eligible registered student writes Layer 1. Only those who qualify write Layer 2. One registration fee covers both — payment does not guarantee Layer 2.

The same sequence for every class from III to IX. Schools register first; parents may also register a child directly.

Qualifying stage
Layer 1
Layer 1 is written by all eligible registered students. It is the qualifying stage of the JSTE talent journey — not a separate contest, and not optional for anyone who has registered.
The gate
Qualification
Progress to Layer 2 follows the published Layer 1 criteria. Those criteria will be published before Layer 2. Until they are official, JSTE does not quote a cutoff, rank threshold or percentage on this page.
Qualified candidates only
Layer 2
Only Layer 1 qualified candidates write Layer 2. There are no walk-ins. There is no extra Layer 2 fee.
Fee rule
One fee. Both layers.
The applicable registration fee covers both Layer 1 and Layer 2. Only candidates who qualify Layer 1 can appear for Layer 2. There is no separate Layer 2 examination fee.
Payment of the registration fee does not guarantee Layer 2 participation. Only candidates who qualify Layer 1 can appear for Layer 2.
